No, you missed it, 'Realist'. We do not know that any of these people are terrorists, evil-doers, or even enemy combatants. The fact that they are in prison does not prove anything. If I put you in prison -- let's say through a case of mistaken identity -- would that prove that you are a criminal? Of course not. It is fundamental to post-medieval standards of justice that harassment by the government proves nothing. It is the duty of the governed to keep the government in line, because the men in charge are constantly tempted to overstep the bounds of their legitimate authority. They've got you hoodwinked. The men at Guantanamo look like criminals, and that's how their jailers want you to see it. But where is the evidence that the prisoners are actually a threat to this country? We have not seen any in seven years. For every single person in that prison, the government must immediately show cause why he is being held, or else it must release him immediately and fly him anywhere he would like to go.

The heartrending crime of this war is not a valid excuse for any other crimes. Yes, we are still "at war" -- and this, too, should change immediately. Have you forgotten? They lied to us, through their teeth, all day long, shamelessly and relentlessly. The war was sold to us with lies. From the very beginning it was reckless, unjustified and immoral; it was initiated, in part, because the Administration wanted to perpetrate atrocities, such as the imprisonment and torture of innocent people, without resistance from the electorate -- from people like you. And they got their wish.

You raise a decent point, yashwata. Maybe we should let these guys go. You point out that we could just let them free in Cuba, and don't point out any other alternative.

Do you really think we can just let a bunch of terrorists loose in Cuba? They should go somewhere we can keep an eye on them, like a maximum security prison in the US.

It's not right to let a single American die at the hands of these evil-doers just because our new leader is too chicken-shit to detain enemy combatants in a time of war.

Maybe you've forgotten, but we are at war here. Our civil justice system does not apply to an enemy fighting us in a war. Those are the kinds of folks we can hold indefinitely until we determine that they are not a risk to us.

You make this question of where to put them (if we did release them) seem like a no-brainer, which is idiotic. It is a very tough problem to solve, for our government and those around the world.

After all, nobody wants to be the caretaker nation of a known terrorist.
