Discover magazine (a surprisingly good monthly, by the way — I recommend it) is having a contest. The idea is to make a video that explains evolution in under two minutes. So I made one. (Just in time; the deadline is tomorrow.) I would ask that you let me know what you think — but no one is watching. So forget I mentioned it.
Speaking of evolution in non-biological systems, do you know about the RepRap project? If not, check out reprap.org. I made one!
By the way, I can’t take credit for the idea that there are exactly three conditions necessary for evolution, nor for the idea that it might apply to non-biological systems. These were formulated (or first popularized — I’m not sure which) by Richard Dawkins in The Selfish Gene.
I could have talked faster, but I think most viewers will need the time to be able to follow what I’m saying. It’s not a well-known argument.
Thanks for watching! It makes the blog seem not completely pointless.
I’m watching! The only thing I have to say about the video is that it could be a lot shorter if you talked faster. But it definitely succeeds in explaining evolution. Breaking it into those three attributes is particularly effective.
